Matakesi Rugby was formed at the beginning of 2020 when a bunch of pals from all over NZ decided to enter a Rugby 7s tournament and use it as a way to catch up with old some old friends, make some new ones, and throw around the pill.
Matakesi Rugby had a lot of success that weekend, not only on the field but off the pitch also, realising that the pink and yellow jersey was more than just a ”one off” bit of fun..
Taking inspiration from the popular invitational sevens tournaments and touring summer sides in the UK and Europe, you can now find a Matakesi Rugby team playing in most tournaments across NZ during the summer 7s season and more recently abroad.
These days Matakesi Rugby is built on the basis of bringing in players from different regions, backgrounds and different levels of rugby, all together the night before a tournament to interconnect, play a bit of code and enjoy the best bits that Rugby has to offer, such as team culture, camaraderie and of course the festivities.
Matakesi Rugby is now also used as a way for female players to have a run around with friends and get as many opportunities to play Rugby 7s as possible. As tournaments for ladies are limited, we believe the more women's rugby that is played, the better off our game will be.
Proof in this has been the example of young up and coming players ( both men and women ) being noticed playing rugby 7s for Matakesi and then being selected to go on and represent NZ on the big stage to make a career out of rugby 7s. We have now had over 100 different men and women represent the pink and yellow jersey.
Matakesi has also hosted 7s specialist coaching clinics for young up and coming talent, focusing on the shortened version of Rugby more specifically rather than the more common 15 a side version of the game.
All Matakesi Rugby sides are picked and play on the club fundamentals that Team Culture is key and always comes first.
